Thank you all for your messages of support and good wishes. Thanks, too, to the folk who joined us at Jack Black<\/a> for a pint last Thursaday. What a lovely surprise to see so many people respond to my blog invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I write about my adventures but, so far, I have not said much about the preparation for the journey. It takes a few months of research to decide where to go. These days, the decision to visit a country is often predicated on the Covid regulations and the accessibility to a visa. Indonesia have relaxed the rules and they issue a visa on arrival that is valid for 30 days and can be extended if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The routes decide themselves based on what there is to see and do. I make a list of the attractions and see if I can plot a route that allows me to experience as much as possible. For instance, Yogyakarta (pronounced Jogjakarta) is fascinating. Situated in the South-central region, it is the only Royal city in Indonesia still ruled by a monarchy. It also has a temple that rivals Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Add in glorious food and I’m sold! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the planning, I could not find many cyclists who have ridden in Java (Bali seems to be the usual destination). Java is mountainous with active volcanos so it will be a breathtaking experience in many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for cycling, you have to carry cycling gear, ordinary clothing, tools and spares. Fortunately the airline limit of 23kg keeps you looking for ways to minimise the weight. I try to have clothing that can be used for cycling and double as ordinary clothing. I have cycling sandals that have inset cleats so they are good for cycling but can be worn for normal use. I have long trousers with removable leggings so that I can wear shorts or longs. I do not wear lycra so my cycle pants can be worn in both instances and some of my shirts are interchangeable. This all helps to reduce the bulk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes a while to pack Bobbie. She needs to be protected as much as possible from friction and bumps while in the plane<\/p>\n\n\n\n
