Tioman is a lovely tropical island.\u00a0 It has sultry weather, sandy beaches, warm clear water and coral reefs.\u00a0 There are rustic holiday resorts dotted around the coastline but there is no habitation inland.\u00a0 In fact the whole island shuts down in the monsoon season, it only re-opened at the beginning of March – just in time for me!\u00a0 The people are friendly, the food is good and the diving is excellent.\u00a0 It’s very popular with the locals with people as far away as Kuala Lumpur coming across for the weekend.<\/p>\n

Yesterday I walked with Linn, Alan and Dominique from Kampung Salang through the jungle to Kampung Air Batung and then along the beach and promenade to the main village, Kampung Tekek.\u00a0 It was an interesting experience, a walk in the jungle is not a walk in the park.\u00a0 Apart from the dense vegetation, there are vines and roots to trip you up, thorns on most branches and leaves so when you trip and grab a handhold you get a surprise!\u00a0 We were attacked by a swarm of wasps as we walked past their nest causing much running, yelling and cursing and consternation for a while.<\/p>\n

But we did come down into a beautiful uninhabited bay where we stopped for a dip.\u00a0 It was a long walk – 13 kms and 6 hours – although we did get lost for a while probably adding a kilometre and an hour to the totals.\u00a0 We then caught a water taxi back to Salang and were there in 20 mins!<\/p>\n
